SELL SURPLUS ELECTRICAL WIRE IN MONTGOMERY COUNTY, MARYLAND

Laboratory fit-outs in Shady Grove, medical work around Bethesda and tenant improvements along Rockville Pike all leave usable cable behind. We buy that material and travel to review it.

Montgomery County’s construction sits along one spine. From Bethesda and Silver Spring north through Rockville, Gaithersburg and Germantown, the I-270 corridor carries most of the county’s laboratory, medical, federal-adjacent and technology work. Projects there are large, phased and often re-planned mid-build, which is why so much unused cable ends up in storage rooms, mezzanines and loading docks across the county.

The pattern of surplus follows the pattern of development. A life-science fit-out in Shady Grove buys tray cable and instrumentation by the reel and uses four fifths of it. A medical suite near Rockville Pike orders THHN in colors the next phase does not need. A tenant improvement in a Silver Spring mixed-use building pulls service cable for a panel that is later relocated. None of that is scrap. It is material that lost its job.

We buy it from businesses across Montgomery County: electrical contractors, distributors holding slow-moving stock, laboratory and facility managers, property management offices and low-voltage installers. The scope is narrow by design: wire and cable, and nothing else. Transformers, switchgear, breakers, MCCs, generators and machinery are outside it. We travel to see material where it sits and quote from the reel rather than from the description.

Where surplus wire comes from in Montgomery County

  • Shady Grove and the I-270 life-science corridor — cleanroom and laboratory fit-outs release tray cable, PLTC instrumentation, shielded control cable and clean grounding conductor when a suite is re-planned or a tenant leaves.
  • Rockville Pike and the Rockville core — mixed-use, medical-office and parking work along MD-355 produces THHN feeders, MC branch whips, SER for tenant services and URD for site lighting.
  • Bethesda medical and NIH-adjacent construction — hospital and research renovations generate fire-alarm cable, emergency feeder, XHHW-2 and bare copper, with badging and escort rules at the federal-adjacent sites.
  • Germantown — office, lab and light-industrial buildings off Century Boulevard and Aircraft Drive turn over equipment and leave VFD cable, motor leads, control pairs and SOOW cord behind.
  • Silver Spring redevelopment — downtown residential and retail built over existing infrastructure yields riser feeder, service-entrance cable and garage or site-lighting runs cut short by design changes.
  • Gaithersburg technology and warehouse space — controls contractors, HVAC rebuilds and industrial tenants clearing cribs produce short reels of control cable, high-temperature lead wire and assorted building wire.

Wire types we see most in Montgomery County

Laboratory and medical work sets the mix here. Shielded and twisted-pair constructions show up far more often than they do on residential work, and the building wire tends to be copper in small to mid sizes rather than large aluminum feeder.

Who we buy from in Montgomery County

Most of our county work comes from contractors whose shop is in Rockville, Gaithersburg or Silver Spring and whose jobs are spread across the corridor. We also hear from distributors clearing a discontinued color or a reel size nobody orders, from lab managers who inherited a cage of part-reels, and from property managers holding material left by a departing tenant.

  • Contractors still holding reels from completed jobs
  • Electrical distributors with discontinued or slow-moving inventory
  • Laboratory, biotech and research facility managers
  • Property managers and building engineers after a tenant move-out
  • Low-voltage, controls and telecom installers
  • Mechanical and HVAC contractors with equipment-changeout cable

Pickup and access across Montgomery County

Access is the part of a county lot that gets underestimated. Downtown Bethesda and central Silver Spring mean shared loading docks, freight elevators with scheduled windows, residential permit parking and alleys that a tractor-trailer cannot enter. Buildings with underground garages impose height restrictions that rule out anything but a box truck. We plan the vehicle around the building, not around the map.

North of the Beltway the problem disappears. Properties off I-270 between Shady Grove and Germantown, and the industrial pockets around Frederick Avenue, offer dock height, lift equipment and yard space a 53-foot trailer can use. Rockville Pike and I-495 remain slow in both directions through most of the working day, so collections there are scheduled rather than improvised.

What we need from you

Send the number of reels, spools or coils, whatever the tag says about construction and conductor size, a rough footage or weight figure, and the state of the jacket. Photographs settle more than prose does: the drum face, the printed legend and the tag together answer most questions. If the material came from a named project, say which one. Matched reels from a cancelled phase are easier to move than the same lengths split across mixed colors.

Every submission gets a review and a direct answer. Anything we cannot use gets a straight refusal with a reason attached, rather than an open-ended silence.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • Do you buy part-reels from laboratory and cleanroom fit-outs?

Yes. Partial reels of tray cable, PLTC instrumentation and shielded control cable are the most common submission we get from the I-270 corridor. Footage matters, and so does the jacket print: a reel that can be identified from its marking is far easier to review than one with a missing tag.

  • Can you collect from a building in downtown Bethesda or Silver Spring?

Usually, but the building sets the terms. Tell us about dock reservations, freight elevator hours, garage height limits and whether a trailer can reach the door. Where a trailer cannot, we work with a box truck and liftgate, and we may split a large lot across more than one visit.

  • Do you buy wire from federal-adjacent construction sites?

We review it, subject to the site. Badging, escort requirements, delivery windows and material release paperwork all affect scheduling. Send the constraints with the submission and we will tell you what is workable before anyone arrives at the gate.

  • What about aluminum feeder and service cable?

Aluminum XHHW, SER and SEU are bought routinely, in sizes from 2-2-2-4 SER up through 4/0 and larger paralleled feeder. Odd lengths are fine as long as the reel is identified and the material has not been pulled through conduit.

  • Do you only work inside Montgomery County?

No. We buy across Maryland and Washington, DC. Montgomery County lots are often combined with material at a contractor shop in Howard or Prince George’s County, and that can be arranged in one trip.
