HOW SELLING SURPLUS WIRE WORKS
No account setup, no bidding platform, no obligation to accept. You send photos and details, we review the material properly and come back with a straight answer.
Once terms are agreed, collection is planned around reel weight and site access.
Selling surplus wire should be simpler than it usually is. Most sellers have three questions: what is it worth, who collects it, and how quickly can it be gone. The process below answers all three before anything moves.
Send details and photos
Use the quote form or call. Reel faces, jacket legends, tags and cut ends tell us the construction, size and manufacturer. Include the city and ZIP where the material sits.
We review and quote
We check construction, condition, footage and how the reel sits before making an offer. Mixed lots are reviewed item by item so nothing is priced by assumption.
Agree the terms
If the material works for us, we agree price, what is included and who handles removal. Nothing is collected until both sides have agreed in writing.
Pickup or shipping
Larger lots in DC and Maryland are collected by us. Smaller quantities usually ship. Loading access decides which route is practical.
What makes a submission easy to quote
A complete submission usually gets a firm answer the same day. An incomplete one needs a second round of questions, which is where most delays come from.
| Detail | Why we ask | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Construction | Sets the buyer pool and the price band | THHN/THWN-2, XHHW-2, MC, tray cable, 15kV EPR |
| Size and conductor count | Determines copper content and usable applications | 4/0, 3 conductor plus ground |
| Voltage rating | Limits where the cable can be installed | 600V, 2kV, 15kV |
| Footage or weight | The single largest price driver | 12 reels, roughly 6,000 ft |
| Condition | Changes usable length and price | New surplus, partial reel, used |
| Packaging | Affects handling and freight | Wooden reel, spool, carton, coil |
| Location and access | Decides vehicle and labour | Dock, forklift, alley, basement |
Condition: what we mean by surplus
Surplus does not have to be perfect, but it has to be identifiable and usable. We are straightforward about the difference:
- New surplus — never installed, original packaging or factory tag, clean jacket
- Unused — out of the package but never pulled, dry and undamaged
- Partial reel — used in part, remaining length known or measurable, jacket intact
- Used — removed from service, described honestly, still legible and dry
- Unknown — no tag, no legible print, or mixed material that cannot be identified
We do not promise to buy every item regardless of condition. Wet, mud-covered, sun-damaged or unidentified cable is usually declined, and mixed lots are often bought in part rather than whole. That is not a negotiating position — it is what we can actually place.
Photograph the print, not the pile
One sharp photo of the jacket legend answers construction, size, voltage and temperature rating in a single frame. Three wide shots of a dark warehouse answer none of them. If you photograph nothing else, photograph the print and the tag.
Payment and paperwork
Terms are agreed before collection, and payment is made according to the terms in the offer. If your organization needs a purchase order, a bill of sale, weight tickets or a certificate of disposal, say so at the start — those requirements are easier to meet before the truck is loaded than after.
Collection and shipping
For larger lots we collect. Reel weight, dock height, forklift capacity, gate hours and turnaround room all matter, and we would rather ask twice than arrive with the wrong vehicle. For smaller quantities — a few partial reels, a carton of control cable — shipping is usually cheaper than a dedicated truck, and we will say so.
How quickly can it happen
Most quote requests are reviewed within one business day. Once terms are agreed, collection is usually scheduled within the following week, subject to access and equipment. If you are under a deadline — a lease ending, a building coming down, a yard that has to be clear by Friday — tell us at the start and we will tell you honestly whether it is achievable.
What we will not do
We will not inflate a number to win a load and renegotiate on the truck. We will not ask you to strip or cut material to change how it is classified. We will not claim a local office or a facility we do not have. If the material is not a fit, we say so and move on.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a cost to get a quote?
No. Reviewing photos and details is free and carries no obligation. There is no listing fee, no inspection fee and no charge if you decide not to sell.
How long does a quote take?
Most submissions are reviewed within one business day. Large mixed lots or material needing an inventory review can take longer, and we will tell you when that is the case.
Do I need to weigh or measure the wire?
It helps but it is not required. A legible factory tag with footage is ideal. Otherwise an honest estimate — "about 12 reels, roughly half full" — is enough for a first conversation, with a firm number confirmed at collection.
Can you collect if we have no forklift?
Yes, but tell us. Large reels without a forklift require different equipment and more labour, which affects scheduling. It is a logistics question, not a reason to decline.
Can we deliver the wire to you instead?
For smaller quantities, shipping or drop-off arrangements can be discussed once we have reviewed the material. We do not publish a public drop-off address, so this is always arranged as part of a quote.
Send the details.
We’ll review the reel.
Tell us what you have and where it sits. Photos of the reel, the jacket legend and the tag do more than a paragraph of description.
